It's more than 70 years old and half the size it needs to be. The Rock Island Police Station has served beyond its capacity. The City Council decided in July to build a replacement. It made that decision after a space needs study showed the police department needs to build new. The City has been buying property and hiring construction managers, and is now one week away from seeing design plans. It selected acreage between 12th and 13th streets and Fifth and Seventh avenues. Council members approved spending another $12,500 dollars on a more in-depth environmental study. The city also approved hiring a construction manager to oversee the project for $1.7 million. The City will borrow money to fund construction of the building, a $17.5 million project.
